Oversize and Overweight Permits

An Oversize and Overweight permit is required for transportation of goods not conforming to the standards detailed in the Highway Traffic Act. The information on this page will help you make an application to the County of Lambton for permission to travel Lambton County roads with an oversize/overweight load/vehicle.

You'll find the following information below:

Been here before and already have a Portal account? Go immediately to the permit application links.

View the County Road Network map to see all roads in our network.

It is the responsibility of the Applicant and/or Carrier to obtain approval from the Ministry of Transportation Ontario and/or Local Road Authorities where moves require travel on Provincial Highways and/or local roads.

You can find a list of website for local municipalities on the County Government page.

The Oversized Load Corridor (OLC) is a designated protected route on existing roadways of the City of Sarnia, County of Lambton, and MTO. It connects fabricators to the Port of Sarnia for the unimpeded import/export and trans-shipment of oversized product to and from fabricators’ locations and Sarnia-Lambton’s industrial base. You can find information regarding this preferred route on the City of Sarnia website.

Overweight permits with routes along roads under a seasonal load restriction WILL NOT be issued during MARCH or APRIL or other periods when road bases are potentially soft. Check the list of seasonal load restrictions before you apply.

Oversize Annual Permits (OO Annual) which fall under the “Enhanced General Load” category have a limited portion of the County Road network available for use. Review the map identifying the County Road network available for any annual load width greater than 3.75m but less than 4.27m.

The County issues two kinds of oversize/overweight permits, with two subtypes under each option:

You will need to determine what permit type you require based on your needs. Details for each permit type are included in the links above.

You'll need to provide specific information in your application based on the permit type (and subtype) you need. Please have the information prepared for your application:

  • Full legal names for applicant and transport companies, including complete company names, address, contact person, phone number, and email.
  • Valid Insurance Certificate(s) that:
    • Name the County of Lambton as additional insured.
    • Include a coverage minimum $5,000,000.00 General Commercial Insurance.
  • Details regarding the route and dates that comply with County requirements.
  • Copies of all associated MTO and/or other local municipal permits.

You can save your permit in draft form in the Transnomis Portal until you've collected all the materials needed for the application.

Make sure you read the General Terms and Conditions on the application page carefully before you enter your information. It is mandatory prior to finalizing your submission.

Oversize/Overweight permits are now being managed by Transnomis’ Permit Central Portal. You need to set up an account before preparing and submitting your application.

If you already have a Permit Central Portal account, you can go right to the permit application you need:

Oversize Annual Permits (OO Annual)

Oversize/Overweight Single Trip Permits (OO Trip)

All responses to your application will be sent to your email account from Permit Central Notification (notifications@transnomis.com). If you do not receive a confirmation email or notices after you submit your application, check your spam or junk folders.

Note: While both annual permit types are the same price, the Enhanced-type permit has reduced road network availability (due to infrastructure constraints) and requires mandatory private escort vehicles to accompany loads.
